So, I felt like making a general movies thread. ITT, we discuss movies.
I just saw the new trailer for Max Payne, and, I think I'm pretty sold on the movie. It just looks so wonderfully fucked up. Plus it's got Mila Kunis looking all slutty.
Also, is it just me, or does Babylon A.D. actually look good? Anyone see it yet?

Tropic Thunder is filled with dumb humor. You like dumb humor? Then this movie is for you.

Also, is it just me, or does Babylon A.D. actually look good? Anyone see it yet? Just my opinion... I thought it was gonna be good too but FUCK what a mess of a movie that was. I saw it this past weekend and was not impressed. Just way too much confusion going on with not enough closure. I'm not gonna say it wasn't entertaining, but it was just like kinda chaotic. Character motivations were all over the place and inconsistent. Acting was ok but kinda cliche (and i'm not talking about Vin here either who was pretty much the same Vin Diesel as in every movie...which often i enjoy, but just saying). And their dystopian future was kinda all over the place in terms of the message they were trying to send. I know this was based on a book and my friend who saw the book basically said the movie was just like dealing with too many themes at once and couldn't really focus on one thing too well. It was just too much for a short movie (with like 30 minutes of previews, no joke). Also, you'd expect a lot of action and good fighting from this movie but it was pretty minimal. I don't know how $$$ movies are near you but I wouldn't pay more then $8 for this. I paid $12 and felt kinda ripped off even though the conversation with my friends after the movie was fun. Also we saw the preview for the new Fast & the Furious ;D

When it comes to opinions, there are very few people I trust more than the Dump, so I'm going to use moto's movie thread to ask...
WHAT THE FUCK IS THE OBSESSION WITH "NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS"!?!?!
I mean, okay - stop motion animation, unique art style, cool.
So, why the fuck does every teenage girl and suburban goth kid have such a fucking hard on for this movie? I tried watching it and was just bored all the way through - can someone who's seen it all the way through explain the appeal to me?

It made goth more nstream, and it was directed by Tim Burton. That's pretty much it.

I have no fucking clue. Seriously. It's a cute movie, sure, and Halloweentown was totally the coolest level of Kingdom Hearts, but...
I think that it's just because they won't let it die. It's not really a dark movie, or a "gothy" movie - I mean, it's more a musical than anything - it just has dark colors, and shitheads just latch themselves onto it because oooohhhh... it's soooo dark and soooo feels my paaaaaiiiiin. Or, whatever. It has dark themes, yeah, but so does Christmas With the Kranks. :T
Who knows, man? I mean, these are the same fucks that keep buying KoRn albums, so let's not try to figure them out lest we become monsters ourselves.

I guess we can say that fanbases ruin everything, then.
EVERYTHING.

I had been wanting to see Nightmare for YEARS cause it was so hyped up. First time I saw it, i turned it off halfway through. I was NOT expecting there to be so much singing. I don't mind singing, but I'm just not into musical narratives, or at least not at all then. A few years after that, I gave it a second try. I still think there is more singing then I'd like but I was able to get into the story more. I think the story was very strong and I definitely appreciate the animation. I do agree its given much more credit due to the dark/goth themes but whatever, I can't really blame the movie's creators for the world's children turning into goth pussies. I don't think Tim Burton foresaw that or intended to appeal to THAT element specifically So yeah, I find Nightmare enjoyable...but i LOVE Corpse Bride. If you guys haven't seen that, I really really recommend that. There's still singing, but not as much. There's a stronger sense of humor and the movie is a bit shorter in general. Nightmare tends to drag a bit, Corpse Bride goes by very fast.

I like it... And I'm not even one of those black makeup rockin' pricks, either! I don't like that it's so popular now, and that a NEW AND IMPROVED version of the same fucking movie comes out every year, though. I like Tim Burton's stuff, shit, I even liked Sweeny Todd. I think I'm just Tim Burton's bitch, but yeah, seeing all of these gloomy fucks shambling around everywhere with Jack Skellington's face plastered onto the sides of their handbags does not sit well with me.

My sister LOVES it. Which I kinda think proves your point. She's not really goth or emo, but it's like she wants to get as close to it as she can without being labeled something. Eh... I've never bothered to sit down and watch it, because of the singing. I'm not even entirely sure what it's about.

One of the things I liked about it when I first saw it was the fact that it was stop motion, AND had a Christmas theme, BUT, unlike all of the Christmas "classics" featuring stop motion animation, it was a little out in left field. Now, just like everything else that had a cult fanbase, it's whored with impunity, and milked for every potential penny it could generate. Thank god Tim Burton did it, or there'd be six hundred sequels by now, just like all of the original Disney movies.

So, we can agree on fanbases being the worst thing ever, okey-dokey.
Seeing as we're talking movies, I finally got around to watching Cloverfield and I was kind of disappointed. I mean, I heard a lot of mixed reviews on it, but essentially it was Blair Witch + Cthuloid Monster.
It was enjoyable, but nothing special - I'd read the shit out of any continuation novels about that monster and people going to war with it, really.

Yeah, pretty much. It's a rough road though to figure who teh worst fanbase is - Earthbound fans, Lovecraft fans, or "Nightmare before Christmas" fans.
