I never really liked the series, I tried playing 2 and 3, couldn't get into either. tbh, it comes across as a pokeymans with a whole party at once instead of one fighting/five in ball. I don't mean it in a bad way - your party is just constantly rotating in order to keep everything levelled, and I hate games like that. guess I'm a classic rpg player, I just like getting one character and making them ubersweets. the story seemed like a lot of awesome, tho. I just couldn't bear to sit and, well, play through the game. it has its moments, and there's some neat things that make up the gameplay, but as a whole, I detest the gameplay. 'course, I also like Too Human, and a month after I got it, there are still people who laugh at me when I say I like that game. The trick isn't levelling, it's levelling them up high enough to get some kick ass skills, then fusing them bastards together to make demons with better stats and skills and defenses. Although, you've named pretty much every downside of the game - in SMT: Nocturne, the story is told in such miniscule amounts that you either love it, or you hate it. There is no middle ground to that. I liked it, but after twenty minute cutscenes in Final Fantasy X, I was ready to get a little bit of a minimalist storytelling.

my preferred storyline goes like: *game opens* [random old guy/lady:] I am a seer/ess. you, Zig, are all that is left of our village. we don't know what happened to it, or why. anywho, we have a shop and an inn up and running still for some reason, so go and venture off into the wilderness and kill some shit, pick up some loots, and level yer skills. [Zig:] Alright. *game starts, no further cutscenes* I guess in the beginning stages of the game, I felt useless and like my party was always lacking. even though I was capturing/converting some monsters, I stayed nly with the humans, because I couldn't see any near-future uses for more than half the mobs I collected. I started fusing some, and they always came back super shitty, so that didn't help. iirc, Nocturne is the only RPG I've been a few hours into and just gave up on it due to the whole, "this is fucking lame." thing. oh, and I saved in a tunnel at some point. everytime I got a random battle after loading the save, instant party wipe ensued. I figured I was just SMT retarded and never tried again.

I'm gonna give Black Sigil a go. Dunno if any of you guys have heard of it, but I first heard about the game a while back, when the indie dev behind it was showing off some screens and everyone was going "ZOMG LOOKS LIKE CHRONO TRIGGER!11!1!1 WILL BE AWESOME CONFIRM'D!1!11!!1". Anyway, game kept getting delayed for whatever reasons, but it finally came out a week or so ago. Reviews have been fairly average thus far, but I'm willing to give it a try.

Oooooh, THAT tunnel... I'm sorry, G. what, is it widely known to suck? all I know is I ran around for about an hour just killing shit because I couldn't find where I had to go. then I went to some place, ended up in some tunnel system from hell, and died over... and over... and over.

The "Nostalgia" steampunk game was discussed here before and now there's a trailer. I'm torn - I think they did great work on the anime parts but I wish the in game modely didn't look so...young. They look like kids. I'd rather they have made the in game modely not look so anime-inspired and had them more western looking. It does look like a cool game though with a lot of different styles of play.

There are a lot of people who quit at that tunnel. The difficulty spikes up from "lolwutjrpg" to "Nintendo Hard" really quickly there, and the game never really finds a good balance between the two until a few dungeons later.

yeah, kinda reminds me of going from act 1 to act 2 when you're playing diablo 2 on nightmare difficulty.
through the first playthrough and the replay of the first act, it's like, "lol pwnufuks", but once you hit act 2 on nightmare...
"wtfux" - usually said as you enter a tomb with zombies, mummies, skeletons, fucking electro-charged beetles, and those fucks that sit around resurrecting anything undead - which is more than half the room. not to mention that you're on nightmare, so there's like a 95% chance that at least one mob is elite or that some of the normal mobs are champion quality.
speaking of awesome hack and slash, is anyone interested in Diablo 3? I think it'll be sicker than cancer.

So, first impressions of Black Sigil... Haven't really gotten too far into it, but so far, it's seeming like a pretty by-the-books kind of RPG. Not necessarily a bad thing, though. There are two major annoyances, for me, though; for one, the encounter rate (yep, random battles in this game) is annoyingly high. The second flaw goes hand-in-hand with the first, and that's the fact that the battle system seems really slow. Neither of these flaws are exactly "game-breaking", but they just make the game a tad bit annoying to play. Maybe once I get further into the game, and get my characters stronger, it won't be as bad; I dunno, guess I'll just have to wait and see.

I've always wanted to try Starcraft and Warcraft, but I don't want to fork out $30-$40 for the games to find out I hate all of the micro-management (like a BOSS). There's mining and forestry type crap in both games, right? Convince me that I need to try at least one of the two games out!...

Starcraft is fun if you're playing with other people.
Me, Ross, and AP ganging up to rape the CPU = good times....

Me and my friends had a huge amount of fun with Starcraft even though we were never good at the n game. We are still playing Warcraft 3 from time to time, but only for the user generated maps, the custom games. Custom games such as Tower Defenses, Footmen Frenzy, DOTA (this is where I got my name 'Slithice' for PSN/XBL), and many others makes Warcraft 3 a load of fun to play. These custom games aren't half-assed either, some people took their time, for example, creating actual models of characters such as Naruto and putting him into the game. Starcraft and Warcraft are great fun, but even better with friends.

Relevant, related thought...
Why is there no Diablo style game on the DS?
The PSP has Monster Hunter going for it, why would the DS have something similar? Killing, splattering, smashing things, taking characters up in levels and playing them in a local wifi setting with a small group of friends... It seems like a no-brainer to me.

Cuz whenever someone makes an RTS-style game for the DS, it's either dumbed down (Civ Rev), stupid (Robopocalypse), kiddy, or shitty (End War).
It's one of those things that, some jerk at Blizzard'll figure it out, and then everyone'll be all "... Ohhhhh...."
Oh, hey, so, Knights in the Nightmare. I can't tell yet if I <3 this game or want to open a portal to hell so I can send it back to wence it came.
Like, it's a really neat, and really way-fucking-out-there game. There's a lot going on, a lot to the game, a fuckton of tutorials and such, and it's really fun to play. There are some annoying bits, but, that might just be because I'm not really used to this game yet, and... I really don't think there'll ever ever ever EVER be another game like this. It's just really crazy out there.
But, fuck, I love really crazy out there games, so I'm sure by the end of this game I'll be <3ing it all over. Or, at least, until Devil Survivor comes out (squeee!!)
