Okay. It's very easy to see that this is a really bad company line. But, if I had to guess, the real reason that it's not coming out here is because Nintendo's more concerned about making sure Japan has enough of 'em to go around, so we're the afterthought. But, yeah. Real bad company line. "We make enough money off the old hotness - you saps don't need the new."

Any gamer from the 80's and really 90's are totally used to that. I also realize the JP market totally consumed the DS's like a bunch of world eating Shuma-Goraths. Whereas the DS wasn't quite AS consumed in the US. Nintendo wanting to give first dibs to their home market that appreciates them a bit more isn't as annoying to me as "these saps can wait til they're done with their peas and then buy new SNOW peas". Maybe I like snow peas better and didn't want to fill up on regular peas!!

WTF is the big deal with the new DS, anyway? What REALLY needs to come out is a NEW handheld, one you need a forklift to carry, and it could be called WEIGHTED COMPANION CUBE!
Seriously, why can't the DS just be the DS. What the fuck does it need cameras for? Why not a blender or reciprocating saw attachment while they're at it? Who decides on this shit, and how do I get paid to make really bad decisions over and over again while a bleating consumer base froths at the mouth and throws their paychecks at me, too?

No region free as in, for everything, or just for the DSi's Virtual Console?

Everything. Software will be region-locked, and the handheld is being designed, supposedly, to be able to take advantage of regional networking systems for its online services.

That sounds like a positive and I realize there may be advantages to doing it that way, but I much prefer being able to buy games from different regions (considering how US still doesn't get some of the JP games that I like). Also, I like being able to play against people from other regions. Being able to race against international players in Mario Kart Wii has been pretty cool.
That said, i realize my views are the minority views and that many gamers would prefer to have networks localized to them if it supposedly came with things we wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

The games that are WFC-compatible will still be able to play online against people around the world, so you'll still be able to play against Africans and Japanese and Frenchies in Mario Kart and whatnot. It seems that they're just doing fine-tuning so that systems in each region will have the best possible connection for that region. They'll still be going to the same servers, though, so you're not going to be losing international functionality.
I guess. I dunno. I'm just grasping at straws here.

Ok, well that's good news. So the games won't be region-free to USE in DS systems but the online gameplay can be region-free to play against others. Still, I'd easily sacrifice maximal fine-tuning of networks in order to have region-free game accessibility. But I'm guessing Nintendo figures that view isn't as popular or hence profitable. They're likely correct.

Well, the only games it matters on are games specifically made for the DSi. They'll still be making DS games, and they'll still play in DS' and DS lites. It's possible that the regular DS games will be region-free in DSis. Another reason that the DSis could be region-free is because of the DSiWare, where the system would be hooking up to a specific server and using a specific currency to download the Ware.
