The Dump is in desperate need of a Asian movie thread. Be it kung fu, horror or whatever it needs to be discussed!! I just recently discovered Death Trance and totally dug it. It's got Tak from Versus (haven't seen it) and Steven Seagal's mother fucking kid! If I got time I'll rip the opening fight scene for you guys.

Versus is okay, actually. Got some very decent fight scenes, but I get the impression that they couldn't really decide on if they wanted a horror movie or a fight scene movie or... a couple other genres. Certianly worth the pick-up if you happen to stumble across it at, like, Wal-Mart.
[edit:] Oh, yeah. The guy who directed it also did the cinematography for the cutscenes in Killer7.

I thought the same thing of 'Versus' Moto, although how much was lost in translation is unsure. In any case, that movie just didn't do it for me.
The best Asian movie I've seen recently was 'Oldboy', which is about a man who is abducted and held prisoner in an apartment for IIRC 15 years before being released to wreak vengeance on whoever incarcerated him. I can't say anymore about it without spoiling the story but rest assured IT'S AWESOME!!!

The "Ichi" movies are all levels of awesome and must be laid out.
I enjoyed the Korean movie "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring" - it's about a Buddhist monk in various stages of his life, falling in love with a woman and then having a child with her; and how he handles it in contrast with his Buddhist beliefs.
...
I watch weird movies. o_o;;

Why only one thread for Asian movies!? Hell, Snakes on a Plane got its own thread and its garbage. I've veered out of the usual Japanese stuff for the Korean and Chinese stuff of late, and its a whole 'nother kind of awesome. Like Mike mentioned, 'Oldboy' is a really cool Korean flick in a trilogy of vengeance, followed by 'Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance' and 'Lady Vengeance' (which I haven't seen yet, Sept 26th is the US release on DVD that I'm waiting for!).
But people tend to just watch the gore/action/horror flicks out of Asia, but there is really some awesome shit. "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter ... and Spring" is one of my favorite films I've seen in the past 2 years, "The King of Masks" was incredible, and "Last Life in the Universe" is just brilliant. Back on the Japan front, "Nobody Knows" is one of the rare films to have ever really moved me as much as it did, as its a story of kids whose mother abandons them to live with her lover and sends them money once in a while to leave the eldest son, who is about 12 to take care of them and convince the younger kids that mom will indeed be home. Nevermind when Takeshi Kitano decides to make something other than Yakuza flicks, he makes something brilliant and a visual feast like "Dolls."
Also I just spent like an hour trying to remember the name of this, but "To Live" by Yang Zhimou is aldkfajdfladksjfkjl

SPEAKING OF KOREAN MOVIES!!1 Those Live Action packs I got from ADV's Labor Day sale had quite a few Korean films included. Mix of comedies, action, etc. In between bouts of FPR, I'm going to be watchin' them, starting a few hours ago with Marrying the Mafia. Romantic comedy, blah blah, it's pretty funny. Nice little movie, tho quite predictable.

Random Blockbuster shelf picking led me to this one... Sword in the MoonWasn't too bad. Everything sort of ties in at the end but the end itself leaves you thinking "huh?".

Fawkin' hell! Not only is the premise skeevy beyond all limits of skeeviosity (creepy ol' rich dudes mocking up a movie audition to score chicks...), but the outcome of Audition is friggin NASTY! Miike is awesome! That shit will NEVER be plagurized and re-canned in North America featuring the pop-tart du jour, like The Ring and Ju-on. Can you imagine Jack Thompson seeing THIS shit? Audition is fucking WHACKED, and I love it! I also rented Dead or Alive 2, and I'm thinking tonight might just be Miike night. I hope I don't piss myself with nightmares tonight (as opposed to just pissing my Spiderman jammies as per the norm...)!
Tomorrow, I will brave the Boxing Day (week...) sale crowds and finaly pick up a copy of Ichi The Killer.
