Soul Calibur 3
People might think I’m too negative on this game, so I’ll start by listing what I like about it first:
Create a Warrior
- This is... a mixed bag, kinda. On one hand, it’s cool to have a super-spiffy custom character, but on the other, it’s not as customizable as you’d like, as you can’t adjust body size or shape… so much for my Grimace CAW… >_<
What you CAN do though, is pretty freakin’ spiffy, as peoples on GameFAQs have gone NUTS making various characters, like Dante from the Devil May Cry series for example. I made a pretty sweet looking Guts from the manga “Berserk” but with the limitations of the CAW mode there are naturally SOMETHINGS you won’t be able to do (DAMMIT! No futzed up eye?! No mechanical arm? wtf)
Campaign Mode
- For those of us who love SRPGs, this one is kinda cool… it’s essentially a giant map that you have to lead your army about on, and then you make your guys take over enemy encampments while fulfilling certain mission objectives (Kill Character X, or Take Enemy Stronghold) – when you get to actual BATTLES, it cuts to the familiar fighting, and you whip on peoples. Of course, that leads into the assumption you can win. Don’t laugh, I’ll explain.
Tira
- Circle of Death – 4LIFE!!!
Now, here’s what I DON’T LIKE:
Lack of Ability to Use CAW
-You have to create edits SPECIAL for the campaign mode – this is cool and nice and fun, yes yes. But, you can’t use them in any other mode. You would have to create them again to use in other modes. Which ones? Why, not story mode. Or even tournament mode.
Computer AI
- Look, it’s like this: The computer is either cripplingly perfect in every way, shape and form, or it’s glitched out the ass. That’s not cool. They reverse 90% of the time, they block PERFECTLY, and pounce on you when your ass is bouncing from their last hit, stringing together combos that you don’t normally see a computer capable of. THIS IS THE KIND OF STUFF I EXPECT FROM A COMPUTER OPPONENT SET TO “VERY HARD” – except, SC3 isn’t set to “Very Hard” – it isn’t set to anything, because the only difficulty setting doesn’t apply to most of the game modes. This is assuming you FIND the difficulty setting, I think it’s rare, fabled, lost to the mists of time, like the fabled Mr. T inspirational video.
They Broke Ivy
- Did you use Ivy a lot? Master her? Bust out Summon Suffering with her while blindfolded and drugged up? You’re fucked. I’m sorry. That’s just the way it is.
Stuff YOU Might Like:
You Can Make Pretty Good edits for other Namco characters
- Like King from Tekken! Or KOS-MOS from Xenosaga! Sadly, you can’t make the King of All Cosmos from Katamari Damacy. ;_____;
If you’re a Soul Calibur DISCIPLE, and you’ve spent hours studying SC2 and wanted MORE MORE MORE, then you will like this game. If you’re like me, more casual, you may struggle to find things to like about this game, but still enjoy it. Not that you spent full price after pre-ordering, but you’ll like the game. If you’re like my sister and you only picked up SC2 to give it a whirl because someone who was playing had to crap a squirrel, then you will hate it because it will feel like you’ve wandered into a demon hell dimension where video games ACTIVELY HATE YOU and want to kill you. Jack Thompson may be right about video games causing anger and violence in kids, because this one is pushing me to shatter a controller in frustration - an act that hasn't happened since the Super Nintendo's "Lufia 2" caused me Puzzle-Rage.
To beat the final boss of SC3 is as close as I think one could come to PHYSICALLY WRESTLING each and every member of the design team to the ground and pounding their faces into a bloody mush.
Overall – I call it “trade in fodder,” I like my video games to have a learning curve, but not one that I get smacked upside the head with.
