Yeah, KoC's MMA stuff was the first thing to pop into my head when I initially put up my last post here, but I figured FP-R would be a little more relevant and recent for most Dumpers now. The UFC game and KoC really are VERY different animals, and if I had a choice, I'd rather have an updated KoC than any UFC game! ;D

I don't even remember for sure if the old UFC games had one-hit KO's but they weren't too prominent or useful. (especially if I can't remember them!) But KOC2 is awesome with those. The animation is brutal too, especially after a russian hook from Fedor ;D KOC 2 also has U-style matches I haven't played the new UFC game or the old PS2 Pride game so I can't say KOC 2 is the best MMA engine out there but it's the best of the ones I played by far which is funny that it's beaten other MMA dedicated games. The edit mode is the icing on the cake

KoC knocks the shit out of most games period. The two resons those games never made it here are because they do wrestling and MMA better than, as you mentioned, dedicated wrestling and MMA games, and secondly, because they require some attention and patience to learn.
The DC UFC game was a lot of fun for me, a little repetitive, but if you really got into it, it was pretty fun (and could be very challenging!). The Pride game for the PS2 is a lot of fun, and has all of Pride's signature slickness, including fighter montages pre fight, Wand coming out to Darude's Sandstorm, and a bunch of other slick shit. The game itself was a blast to play, and included head stomps, cartwheel guard passes, full mount MON-GO-RI-AN chops, drop kicks, and a fisherman's suplex (I think it might have had a GERMAN, too!)! No Fedor, CroCop, Jackson, or any of those guys, but the roster was good nonetheless. The PS2 Pride game also introduced flash KOs, but honestly, I don't remember ever scoring one (I do remember trying with Igor Vovchanchyn multiple times!). If you can find a used copy, I think I can safely say you'd enjoy it!
Speaking of one hit KOs, I'll never forget my Don Frye career mode in KoC 1 versus Gary Goodridge! Eight seconds in, first punch thrown by Big Daddy... Left hook... CRITICAL! Don Frye was counting lights in the Differ Ariake arena. ;D

the Pride game had Fedor... yet he somehow seems underpowered... Why, because he didn't eat the souls of his victims post-mortem, uh, I mean, post-match? PS: Fedor wasn't in the FIRST PS2 Pride game, he was in the broken piece of shit sequel Capcom put out a few years later.

So, I gave the demo for this a spin, and couldn't figure out the ground controls too well.
Is that something that gets easier with practice?
Also, what's the create a fighter like? Decently deep? CAN I MAKE A DECENT FLIP STALEY IN IT?

go through the training bit once- it's worth it....
the ground stuff is doing little 'fireball'- type motions with the stick or with the stick and the button for minor or major transition attempts....
i was weirded out too, but it's not SO hard to get...

In my experience, it's a more deliberate motion. Like, if I just spun out a quick QCF, it usually didn't work. But, if I moved down to down, then kinda rolled it forward, it came out like a charm. Also, the CAF is ok. You get to pick your style of shorts, and you can put up to like 10 sponsors on them at the time. I never got far enough in career mode to start unlocking short designs though, so I dunno how much variety there is. (But my CAF was Jason Wesley, so it works well enough to convert )

The ground positioning and clinch stuff make this game a LOT deeper than if you just stuck to stand-up stuff. I STILL haven't subbed anyone (save for the indispensable tutorial mode that nets you an achievement for completing), but I'm sure it will come. I had some good practice sessions with the CPU that helped me begin to understand the ground work a bit more. Setting the CPU to free and turning off the damage lets you get into the flow of shooting, working on the ground to improve position, and practicing escapes. The Thai clinch in this game is a blast, and can lead to some SICK KOs! Unfortunately, throws (Judo hip tosses or belly to belly takedowns) will not produce KOs, which is a sad oversight on the developers' part. Watch here at about 40 sec for an example of why throws should have KO capacity. (Ignore Goldberg's annoying shit). CONS: The CAF is pretty limited, and the career mode, save for the fights, is BO-RING and stripped down. I'm having a hard time caring about it at all, but maybe I need to give it a bit more time. The music is pretty lame with no options if you don't care for screaming, talentless reprobates, and the banter between Goldberg and Rogan is vomit inducing at times, and sounds just like the real thing (blowing sunshine up the favored ones asses, etc). I'd have loved the option to have been able to turn on a Spanish announce team instead. PROS: Some really cool action that once you learn how the game expects you to approach various situations, allows for a pretty smooth flow of action. It's pretty cool how various positions almost seamlessly flow into other positions (ground to standing, to clinch, etc). The KOs can be incredibly satisfying, and you're not rewarded for just flying in guns blazing, and in fact, that approach can leave you exhausted and open for a quick sub or worse, KO (trying to kill Tim "the stainiack" Sylvia with big Nog and Arlovski, only to be KOed by that lumbering ape =/= cool). Mirko Filipovic being in the game is a big plus, too (I've KOed Gabriel Gonzaga at least a half dozen times already! Right kick, hospital, left kick CEMETARY!)! ;D I haven't tried online with this thing so far, but from what I hear, I don't really want to (unless you guys are on) because there are a lot of winners out there who disconnect or cheat all of the time. I'm still sitting on the fence with this game, at times I really like it, and other times, Castle Crashers just seems like a better use of my limited free time!

So if I can snag it on the cheap, go for it?
It sounds like ther'es enough positive to make it worthwhile, if I can just ignore the sound part of everything. Easy enough solution, turn all the music down and blare "The Final Countdown" the entire time.

YESSSS!!! I always rock that song in Saints Row while I'm running over the elderly in a Lamborghini! There are a lot of good points to the game, and I'm really not playing it a lot right now, but I will play it more in a week or so (national accreditation exam on Tuesday, must study... ). The career mode is really dry and full of text menus. You basically run on a calendar, deciding what aspect you want to work on (cardio, strength, endurance or some shit), or you can spar with increasingly difficult opponents (as you go up in the rankings, you get access to tougher sparing partners). Opportunities to expand your repertoire of techniques come in the form of seminars that you can participate in during the time before your next fight. At first, you fight in dark matches on shit like ultimate fight night, and eventually work your way up to prime spots in PPVs (BIG props for not forcing players to play through a TUF mode or something equally useless!). You're presented with various options for your next fight, with higher experience (or cred, or whatever the hell they call it in the game) and monetary reward coming from tougher opponents. It's all pretty good, it's just that it can be really boring if all you're doing is managing your fighter's timetable before a fight. The exhibition fights are always fun, and there's a "classic fight" mode, kind of like Giant Gram's mode where you had to recreate a classic match to unlock a movie clip of said match! The "classic fights" are all fairly recent, and you have to do shit like win by decision with Forrest versus Bonnar, or beat Rich Franklin in RD1 with Silva via clinch nkees, etc. Meeting the criteria unlocks a video of the fight. I think UFC shit the bed by not including Gracie, the Slamcock bros, Jerremy Horn, Don Frye, and some of the other TRUE classic fighters (hell, even "Septic" Tank Abbott and Kimo would have been nice inclusions), but I have a feeling that Dana White's ego got in the way of that happening. Maybe in next year's game, (or the year after that, or the year after that...). So yeah, all in all, I think there's some depth in the game, and I really haven't even dipped much past the surface of the game, and haven't tried all of the game modes, so maybe there's more in store yet.

Dude, I've played this game back-and-forth, and I LOVE it. Just, absolutely love it. There are a couple things that I can really see need a bit of work (expanding the CAF (like allowing red hair and CAFs to have special moves), making different fighting styles more distinct (especially on the ground)), but I love it. The career sucked me in and I got really addicted to it, retiring with the Middleweight Championship with my first CAF, and I'm trying to get a halfway decent Fedor so I can dominate the Heavyweight Division (gotta get that Pound-For-Pound Achievement!). LOVE IT.
And Joe, it does get a lot more intuitive as you play. Once you get the hang of things, it's really slick and easy and honestly? I can't imagine them doing much of a better job with this one here.

I think I'm going to start calling this game Fight Night Lite, because it's a (kick)boxing game that teases at submissions but NEVER delivers. I seriously have yet to score even ONE submission outside of the tutorial. I've watched youtube videos, and tried different techniques, but nothing. I want to start taking arms off and choking MFs out!
PS: I WASTED Franklin with Wand, and Franklin telescoped right after the Thai plum delivered nkee! He went down face first into the mat, ass straight up in the air, waiting for Dana White and Joe Rogan to deliver! I wish i could have recorded that match to show you guys! Franklin takes a serious beatdown in my game on the regular!

Take Rampage. Hit a few slams... as long as you don't get countered, you'll drain a good bit of their stamina. Go for a sub and mash the face buttons like your life depends on it. I bet you'll get one.

Okay, I'll try that. My question to anyone out there reading this is how in the F--K could anyone ever get the win by sub with no strikes achievement?
