I guess you guys don't really need topics to review these games, but having been playing them both quite a bit this past week, I kinda wanted to do a topic comparing them, from my point of view. So, uh... here goes.
Now, I'm pretty sure most of you know this is my first Rock Band game, but that I've always been a fan of GH. As far as the set lists go, I still think RB2's edges out WT's. But, WT's hasn't really been too bad, so far. With RB2, I seem to find myself enjoying quite a few of the lower tier songs that I hadn't heard before, but not so much with WT... And so far, RB2's DLC system is a lot more stacked than WT's. I imagine that'll change with time, but they don't seem to have started a regular flow of DLC on WT just yet. I'm interested to see if they'll do like RB and release new stuff on a weekly basis, or if they'll take more time between releases.
One thing I thought was neat for both games was the character creator. Having tampered with both, well... I think I like WT's better. It just seems like I was able to make a more realistic version of the character I made (er, well, I meant for my characters in both games to look as close to me as possible). My RB character just kinda looks... weird.
Getting to the career modes, to be honest, I kind of like both of them. RB2's seems to take a more realistic flow, but I love the crazy venues and goofy stories (and the off-the-wall animations for encore songs) in WT a lot. I also think it's neat how WT features guest appearances from real rockers. Maybe it's not exactly "realistic", but it's pretty neat getting to play Crazy Train with Ozzy, and whatnot.
That said, I like RB2's basic setup and navigation a bit more than WT's. Like, if you go into quickplay in either game, RB2 lists the songs in order of difficulty, whereas, WT just alphabetizes them. I assume there's probably some way to change that and reorder them according to difficulty, but I haven't taken the time to fully explore that. Another thing I really dig about RB2 is some of the animations during songs. Like, once when I was playing Chop Suey!, there was part towards the middle that kinda picked up the tempo, and the screen got all trippy-looking and was flashing in black and white. I like stuff like that, while playing RB.
But, another thing I like in WT more is the note icons. I'm just so used to those little circles, it's been a little weird for me trying to adjust to the rectangles in RB2. I seem to miss quite a few notes I shouldn't be missing in RB2, probably because I misjudge when I'm supposed to strum. I don't know why something as trivial as the shape of the notes is throwing me off. Luckily, it hasn't been too bad lately, and I'm getting used to it, little bit little.
Something that sort of kind of bothers me a little bit in WT is, the songs seem a little bit undercharted. Now, I'm usually able to do fairly well on Hard mode, but can't really advance much after that. GH3 was probably a little overcharted, on Hard mode, but to be honest, I got used to that after a while. Once I was able to successfully run through songs like Raining Blood, I was fine with the difficulty. With WT, Hard seems just a little bit too easy for me, but Expert still feels a little too challenging for me. So, I'm kind of at a weird place with that... RB2's Hard mode seems just right for me, though.
Oh! Another thing I almost forgot about! Battles are back, during career mode, and they're done SO much better this time around. This time, you pretty much just have to avoid failing the song. No getting power ups and "attacking" whoever you're playing against. That was my biggest complaint with GH3; on Hard mode, I could never, NEVER, beat Lou. It just seemed too cheap; he'd tend to get powerups before me, and screw me out of mine when they were coming up for me. That pissed me off so much. I'm glad they kept the concept, and I'm even happier they made it much more doable this time around.
Something WT lacks, though, is a trophy system. Kind of trivial, I guess, but I'm finding myself addicted to this concept of collecting trophies now, in PS3 games. RB2 has 'em.
I haven't tried WT's song creator yet, simply because it'll probably go way over my head and I'll never make a half-way decent song. But, I did encounter an annoying error/ glitch... While exiting GHTunes, my game completely froze; I couldn't do anything, and I had to manually shut down the PS3 (with my disc still in it), then restart to get it working again. Hopefully that was just a one time malfunction, but I've been too scared to try it again to see if it locks up again.
I've tried drumming a bit, but I'm pretty terrible at it. Of course, I wasn't great with the guitar back when I first picked up the original GH, so hopefully I'll improve on that. The kick pedal is the thing I have the most trouble with, since I can't seem to focus on doing that and hitting the pads at the same time. :/ Heh, my arms have been pretty sore from playing it, though; hell, I had a big sore on my forearm for a couple of days after first playing with the drums for an extended period of time. They still haven't patched the WT drums to work in RB2, yet, but I'm hoping that gets fixed soon. I haven't noticed any of the problems people have been reporting about the WT drums, so I guess that's a good thing.
I really like WT's guitar, but the touch strip seems a little tough to use. To me, it's a little too distracting to switch to it from either strumming or fretting, then to switch back when that section ends. But, this is just yet another new game mechanic that I'm not familiar with, and hopefully with time, I'll learn it better.
I've tried doing vocals quite a bit on both games, but again, only on songs I'm really familiar with. I can do quite well on it, though. But, to be fair, I am only singing on songs that I pretty much know by heart, so...
All in all, I think both games are pretty solid. In fact, I really wish I could mash up the good parts of both games, and have just one perfect band rhythm game, heh...
